So, my computer caught a virus the day after I posted this. The IT guys were able to save my computer but not any of my files. They brought the computer back to me today and I'm going to have to start recreating everything including the first step that I had taken in getting a newsletter started. I think for the 2nd half of this year I am going to try writing one article a month and ask the school health coordinator to include it in her monthly newsletter.

Our principal subscribes to a newsletter metajournal. One person reads all week from all the different educational sources, and then gives a synopsis of the cream of the crop with a link to the real article. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this service. I do not have time to read Kappan, Instructor, Edutopia, or Teachers of Vision every week or month or school year, but I do have 15 minutes a week to hit the high points and carve out another 15 to read something really interesting to me.
So, to coin a phrase so to speak, KISS. Keep it Short, Silly! Put me on your list-serve!

My three books at the moment are:

The Courage to Teach by Parker J. Palmer

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

These are really trying to jump into the top three:

Never Work Harder Than Your Students by Robyn R. Jackson

Summer Ball by Mike Lupica

I read the article "Going the Distance" by Chris Ballard in Sports Illustrated last night. It almost made me cry while inspiring me to dust off my running shoes.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown was the bedtime story for Thomas last night.

Why do we continue to teach grammar and mechanics with a strategy that simply does not work? Why do we force students to rehearse errors and teach grammar exclusively out of the writing context? Would love to hear your responses. More points at http://penningtonpublishing.com/blog/grammar_mechanics/why-daily-oral-language-d-o-l-doesnt-work/ and, more importantly, a grammar/mechanics warm-up/opener/bell-ringer that uses a balanced approach of error analysis and model writing is detailed at http://penningtonpublishing.com/blog/grammar_mechanics/why-daily-oral-language-d-o-l-doesnt-work/.

Although this is a very creative way to get students to journal, it does not focus on the main reason for DOL. Teachers use DOL to review grammar rules and instill the proper punctuation of sentences. Creative writing is fun and an excellent way to get students to write, but lacks in grammar instruction.

I am sorry to hear that you have too much homework. Even though I did write this, I'm not entirely sure that this would work well as an assignment. I think it is only really useful if the person writing the truths is doing it because they want to. In the book, it is a challenge the mother gives to her daughter. It isn't mandatory. The daughter does it reluctantly at first, but soon she finds herself writing truths because she wants to. I think it would need to be the same if a teacher assigned it.
