Mommy’s Helper Learns a New Skill

This afternoon I sat down to relax and sew some squares together on the mitered baby blanket. Will came in and asked if I would show him how to do it. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to show him, but figured he wouldn’t spend much time on it. I was wrong. He picked it right up and went to work. So, I started sewing two more together. We took a break to make dinner and then after eating he picked it up again. We sat and sewed squares together. Now we have it in 3 sections and Will is working on putting two of those together already.

Fetching Fingerless Glove

January 28, 2008

Multimedia message, originally uploaded by lit teacher.

I’d love to blame my lack of blogging on the huge amount of knitting I’ve been doing lately, but I can’t. I do have this one glove to show off. Last Tuesday I drove in to Nashville to meet my friend Beth for a knitting class where we learned how to make this fetching fingerless glove. I left that night with the beginning of a glove. I finished it up just in time to give it to Tobi for her birthday Friday night. Maybe I can finish the next one this week so that she will actually have a pair. If you like this glove you might want to check out the pattern on knitty.com . It really is very easy and fairly quick. The cables make it look harder than it is.

I have a cute purse!

October 3, 2007

BEFORE FELTINGBefore FeltingAFTER FELTINGfinished purseI started it at soccer practice on a Friday and finished it after parent teacher conferences the next Monday. It isn’t as big as I would like for it to be, but I think I can modify the pattern and make exactly what I want. I love the way the stripe turned out. The pattern was just a basic two tone purse. One color up to the just below the handle holes and then another color to the top. I wasn’t sure I wanted the yellow around the handles because I figured it would show dirt too easily. So, I put a little stripe instead.

Felted Phone Holder

September 19, 2007

I made a felted purse as a graduation gift for a former student and daughter of a dear friend. She had seen my felted purse and liked it, so I decided if I made one and stuffed it with a few goodies it would be a perfect graduation gift. I thought I would make a few accessories to go with the purse too. Time ran out and I barely finished the purse itself before graduation night. So, when her mom e-mailed me the other day and asked if I would like to add anything to the care package she was getting together, I knew exactly what to do. I pulled out my needles and got to work. I started with the Cell Phone Holder pattern on page 60 of the book Pursenality Plus by Eva Wiechmann but I skipped the trimming and left off the handle. It only took a few hours to get this little cell phone case done and ready to felt. I tucked a little cash inside and the next day it was ready to be sent on its way to college. Of course this was just enough to get my hands itching for the needles so I dug through my stash and found this Peaches and Cream yarn just begging to be made into a dishcloth. I love the way the ballband cloth actually looks like T’s when done in UT orange and white. The color doesn’t show very well in this picture, but it looks great. I know a Vol fan who is going to love it.

New Dishcloth Pattern

August 2, 2007

I found a little time to pick up the needles today. I really like this dishcloth pattern from the May issue of Creative Knitting. When I started, I thought it would be a gift for my mom, but I’m really liking it. I might just have to keep it for myself. (Sorry Mom!) As quick as it is though I can probably make her one too. I thought I might find the pattern online so that I could give you a link to it. I didn’t find it, but check out this massive dishcloth pattern list. I can’t wait to make a few of the squirrel dishclothes.

Mitered Squares are FUN!!

March 19, 2007

According to Ann and Kay of Mason Dixon Knitting fame, ” Miters are First Mitersone of the most addictive of knitting pleasures.”   I think I may have to agree.  It was the beautiful mitered square bedspread on page 107 of the book that jumped out at me as I flipped through the pages of the book and convinced me that I couldn’t leave Angel Hair Yarn Company without it.  Even though they were a bit intimidating at first, I knew that mitered squares were somewhere in my future.   The future is now, and I don’t knPred Squaresow when the mitering will end.  I have to agree with the Mason Dixon Knitters — the most fun part is playing with colors.  I love the colors in the book,  but I didn’t want to copy them.  I picked up some yarn on ebay to get me started.  Honestly, I chose the colors that were the cheapest.  When I started working with them, they reminded me of my college roommate and her boyfriend.  I decided to use the colors of my life.  The first square represents 3 years at UT Martin.  This next square represents my wonderful husband the Georgia Tech graduate and Nashville Predators fan.  I can’t wait to see what colors show up next.

I guess it’s back to work on the felted purse for me.
Well, at least until my mind starts wandering again.

In case your mind has been wondering what my family does while I’m doing all this knitting, I thought I’d fill you in.  The kids and Bill have been spending a lot of time with Will’s new Perler beads

Ballband Dishcloth from Mason Dixon Knitting

December 28, 2006

When I first purchased Mason*Dixon Knitting I knew I wanted to make some of these ballband dishclothes.  I have to admit, they were a little intimidating.  They looked more difficult than the swirl dishcloth pattern I had committed to memory. Swirl Dishcloth Yesterday, my friend Beth and I opened the book and looked at the pattern again.  We were both feeling a little inadequate in our knitting abilities.  Neither of us knew what exactly what yarn forward or yarn back meant.  After she left, I found myself knitting away, adding row after row to the purse I’ve been working on.   The mindless knitting  allowed my thoughts to wander.  I found myself thinking about the ballband dishcloth pattern.  Ballband DishclothThe next thing I knew, I was digging through my yarn bucket to find two colors of cotton yarn.  I was determined to figure this pattern out.  As I flipped the book open, I noticed the reminder on the last page.  “No project is too ambitious if you crave the result enough.”  That was all I needed to push me into a knitting frenzy.  So, here I am with half a ballband dishcloth on the needle.  It really is easier than it looks.  Thanks to Knitting for Dummies I was able to quickly master the yarn forward and the yarn back.    I think I’ve almost got the pattern memorized already.
